“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.”
~ Genesis 1:1

Genesis reveals God first as an artist – the Creator of all things. At LCA, we strive to help students explore their God-given gifts in order to serve and glorify God as they connect to their own creativity.

+ LOWER SCHOOL ART

Lower School students, Pre-K through 5th grade, attend art classes on a block schedule. Classes explore a concentrated emphasis with a rotation every 4 weeks. The art room is a space for students to learn the Elements of Art and their applications. Art appreciation, as well as Art history is introduced to the students. Inspiration is birthed by studying works of both current artists as well as artists from the past. The artistic experiences provide a means of self-expression and serve to build confidence in each student. The emphasis of our art program at the elementary level is to develop observant examiners of God’s creation, which in turn cultivates creative thinking and problem-solving skills.

There are many opportunities in which our younger students are able to “shine their light” in our community. Several businesses allow us to display artwork on gallery walls. We participate in the annual student show at the Walton Monroe Center for the Arts. Most of our students’ work can be viewed throughout the campus halls and is frequently on display for many campus events.

+ MIDDLE SCHOOL ART

Art is a middle school elective offered in 6th, 7th, and 8th grades. The nine-week class focuses on using the elements of art and principles of design to create 2 and 3 dimensional drawings, paintings, and sculptures. Students are encouraged to study and examine the natural and manmade world and translate these observations into original ideas.

In addition, middle school students, with approval of the Upper School Art Teacher, can participate in our Open Studio after school. These students meet once a week to explore various art mediums including painting, sketching, clay, metals, and other areas of interest. Middle school art students receive opportunities to work on special projects such as creating scenery for the Middle School Broadway production.

+ HIGH SCHOOL ART

LCA offers high school introductory and advanced classes in drawing, painting (2D), and sculpture (3D). These courses are designed to challenge students to solve problems using various art materials appropriate to the class. Students explore and experiment with different media to:

  • Become familiar with a variety of art media while improving their technical skills
  • Make visual statements
  • Practice product presentation
  • Become visually literate

All of these skills are necessary in future workplaces throughout the world. Exploration with both theme and material is emphasized along with personal reflection on ideas of an academic, spiritual, and social nature. Examples include using master works throughout the ages to motivate and inspire student ideas. Students are challenged on personal passion, and individual strengths to produce original and meaningful visual statements.
